cc-Pulse   is a Single Project CCPM add-in module for Microsoft ® Project. cc-Pulse   , which incorporates Critical Chain/Buffer Management concepts, allows the planning of projects using both safe and average estimates of duration, to model the variability in duration that is inherent in all project tasks. cc-Pulse   was designed by Critical Chain project management experts, with input from organizations that currently use the Critical Chain method and related Buffer Management concepts.

cc-Pulse   brings the following features:
  • Provides forward and backward scheduling to eliminate resource contention.
  • Identifies the critical chain based on task and resource dependencies.
  • Calculates and inserts project buffers, feeding buffers, and drum feeding buffers.
  • Provides integrated Task Update that identifies buffer incursion
  • Calculates and displays properly buffer incursion beyond the range 0% -100%.
  • Provides integrated, text-based project and resource reports.
  • Provides objective measurements for task level prioritization.
  • Honors user-specified inputs for task sequencing.
  • Is fully integrated with Microsoft ® Project.
cc-Pulse introduces the concept of an Event Buffer. At times, there are specific events in a project plan for which the project manager needs to have high confidence in the expected start of these events. For example, test labs may be centrally scheduled in such a way that a window of time for the test lab needs to be reserved well in advance. The project manager needs a mechanism to make sure all test samples and test procedures are prepared in time to meet the test lab window. Tasks such as the test lab task can be marked as “Events.” When a task is marked as an “Event”, an “Event Buffer” is inserted as a predecessor to the task designated as the “Event.” The event that is being protected is the expected start of the task marked as the “Event”.

“Event Buffers” are sized using one of the Buffer Size Calculation Methods. These “Event Buffers” use the length of chain leading to the Event task for buffer sizing. If there are several event tasks in a chain, there will be an event buffer preceding each event task. If the event task has multiple predecessors, there will be a sufficiently sized event buffer for each predecessor chain.

cc-Pulse   also features the concept of the bottleneck buffer, which enables the correct subordination steps whenever the resource used for staggering the projects (the drum) is not the most heavily loaded resource across all projects (the bottleneck).

cc-MPulse is a multi-project CCPM add-in module for Microsoft ® Project that incorporates all the features of cc-Pulse and allows project scheduling across an entire enterprise, based on one or more designated drum resources (pacesetter resources). This multi-project scheduling step is crucial to the complete implementation of the Critical Chain Multi-Project Management Method and the exploitation of the full set of benefits afforded by CCPM.

cc-MPulse brings the benefits of finite capacity scheduling to the multi-project environment. Once projects are underway, cc-MPulse updates the expected starts of drum tasks, across all projects, based on the availability of the drum resources.

The following Reports are available in both cc-Pulse and cc-Mpulse :
cc-Pulse™ Reports
The reports produced by ccPulse™ are HTML based. They may be saved as a text file, or saved as a web page.Reports saved as a web page can be offered on an Internet server, for access by stakeholders across the enterprise. Reports saved as a web page can also be opened, edited or sorted, and saved back to HTML by Microsoft ® Excel.

With cc-Pulse™, you have control of report options The General options change the start date, duration units, and horizon of the report. The report can be generated for the active project only, or for all opened projects. By checking “Launch in Internet Explorer”, the report can be previewed in Internet Explorer. Using Internet Explorer, you can display multiple report windows simultaneously.

The Looking Glass   module is a graphical executive information system; a dashboard, that brings Statistical Process Control (SPC) and buffer management to the world of project management. The Looking Glass   presents a graphical multi-project view that allows executives to assess at a glance the state of their multi-project system.
With this multi-project view, any busy executive can focus the attention of his/her managers on the few troubled projects quickly and easily. Should any project require closer scrutiny, a single mouse click provides a graphical presentation of the time history of the project's status snapshots

and a run chart of the expected duration estimates. The Western Electric rules for statistical process control, which run in the background, are also applied to the time-ordered data series. These rules help managers to distinguish real signals of trouble from statistical noise.

The Looking Glass   is fully integrated within cc-Pulse and requires Microsoft ® Excel be installed to view the reports.
